About Perlman Architecture:

Perlman Architecture works on projects of all types, scales, and locations, specializing in high-end residential and institutional work in the Bay Area and around California.

Services

We provide a full range of services: from pre-construction services such as site analysis, feasibility, and programming (figuring out what and how big to build) to full architectural design services and construction administration. We have experienced design ability throughout all project phases and take pride in our work from the big picture of master site planning all the way to refining the exact sheen on each discrete material chosen.

That said, we believe that the world benefits from closely considered design at every level and are willing to cater our scope of services to projects in order to make design accessible to a larger range of clients. This sets us apart. Identifying the right level of design services is essential to the success of a project. We will work with you to determine the most appropriate level of services for your project.

Philosophy

The architectural process can lead anywhere. Perlman Architecture approaches each project without preconceived notions of the final result. We believe that architecture should be artful, but also rigorous, solving for all factors, including programmatic needs, schedule, budget, and material.

Designing for owners in California is particularly special. People come from all over the world with their histories and expectations. Sometimes they want to embrace their history, nod to it, or sometimes reject it outright. Whatever the notion, it brings a rich variety to our built world here. It is a delight to work in this environment and with our clients.

Note from Founder, Lori Perlman:

I named this firm after Alice, Julius, and Russell Perlman: my grandmother, grandfather, and father respectively. I hold myself to the standards of ethics they did and try to measure my actions against how they treated their fellow man and woman.

To me, “Perlman” represents unrelenting personal integrity no matter what the personal costs. My grandparents and father stood for human rights and took action when they saw injustice. They treated people with interest, curiosity, patience, openness, acceptance, tolerance, and empathy. With this name I can honor their memory and have a constant reminder of our ethics.

Appreciation:

I have had great opportunities to work with such talented and creative colleagues over the years. I would like to thank some of my greatest influences personally: Ken Linsteadt, John Goldman, Shay Zak, Patrick Hickox, and Brigid Williams. I am grateful for my time working for them and with each of them closely and I am a better architect for it.

I also appreciate fully the range of talented coworkers and other design professionals, builders, and all of the bright and interesting clients I have had the opportunity of working with over my 22+ years of design in California, Hawai’i, and New England. Thank you.
